What is biomass?

The term “biomass” refers to organic material that is derived directly from plants. It is produced through photosynthesis, the process used by plants to convert the sun's energy into chemical energy. This chemical energy can then be extracted from the biomass through combustion to produce energy that can be used as heat or power.

Why is biomass good for the environment?

The use of biomass is classed as a “carbon-neutral” process because the carbon dioxide released during the generation of energy is balanced by that absorbed by plants during their growth. When sustainable forestry is practiced, the carbon cycle is in balance and complete.

What are carbon credits? Do I qualify?

The European Union's 25-member states established a public carbon-trading market in January 2005 offering financial incentives to those industrial energy companies that use bioenergy.

Large and small carbon credit-style incentive programs are in place or being developed in other countries as most of the world's major economies are committed to reducing greenhouse gas carbon emissions to meet sustainable energy and Kyoto protocol commitments. You may qualify for financial incentives: check with your regional government energy department. What is a wood pellet?

A wood pellet is a source of a stored, green renewable energy produced from wood waste. Pacific BioEnergy uses residual sawmill fibre, namely green sawdust and dry planer mill shavings, and compresses it into cylindrical shaped pellets that are of uniform size, moisture content (3-5%), density (600-650 kilograms per cubic metre), and most importantly, energy content thereby creating a standardized “fluid” heating fuel. The pellet product can be easily managed, free flowing, and is virtually dust-free.

Is it true that burning wood results in poor air quality?

Biomass conversion to energy is much less harmful than fossil fuels because no pollutants such as sulphur dioxide — a contributor to acid rain — are produced. Carbon neutral wood pellet biofuel is highly efficient and through proper burning or gasification, produces little or no emissions.
